Legally Protected Species & Nature Conservation Law - Survey & Advice

A number of animals and plants are protected by law. Badgers, nesting birds and bats are the most commonly encountered species in planning proposals and development work. The presence (or suspected presence0 of a legally protected species at a site requires assessment of potential impact on the individuals and, in some cases, on their habitats. Early survey for these species in a project can save time and money. We can ascertain, firstly, whether a licence will be needed to undertake work that you propose, advise you on procedures and solutions and, if necessary, organise the obtaining of the appropriate licence. We can also supervise works under licence, such as badger exclusions.

Spalding Associates have experience with a large number of legally protected species including:

  • Badger
  • Bats
  • Great Crested Newt
  • Dormouse
  • Nesting birds
  • Protected plants (e.g. shore dock, petalwort)
  • Protected invertebrates (e.g. large blue butterfly, black-veined moth, trembling sea mat)
